Design Process

My professor gave each student two cars to choose between for the tape measures design inspiration. My cars were the 2017 and the 1970’s style Honda civics. After sketching some concepts, I chose the 1970s Honda Civic. In viewing the vibrant yellow vehicle (shown to the left) what struck me was its front turn signals. The way that they are mounted, bubbled up and surrounded by chrome, gives the car lights a depth that I really enjoy. I also drew inspiration from the shape of the front grill particularly where it widens to and capture the headlights.

Our assignment was to use 3ds Max to model the tape measure and then print and finish the model to reflect our cars. I designed the tape measure in three parts so that I could fit a roll off measuring tape inside before sealing it up.
